Ever since I tried Krispy Kreme doughnuts, I have been craving some, but of course, I will have to pay a flight ticket to satisfy this craving. So I googled doughnuts recipes and surprisingly, I found Krispy Kreme ones! I wanted to try to bake them myself from A to Zee and so I did. I was so pleased with how they turned out then I actually baked the same recipe a couple of times over the summer. The doughnuts do actually smell and taste like Krispy Kreme; they are soft, springy and delicious (you can ask my family, my two best friends, a family friend and the three strangers who tried them). I wanted to save this recipe in my recipes box and not share it so I can bake the doughnuts for my future daughter (yes, it will be a girl) and be the best mum ever. But, so many have asked for the recipe so I’m letting the cat out of the bag!
YOU WILL NEED…
2 1/4 tsp yeast
1/2 warm water cup
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup warm milk
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup butter
1 large egg
1 egg yolk
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
In a large bowl, add yeast, warm water and 1/2 a tsp sugar, beat it for 1-2 minutes and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Add to it warm milk, the remaining sugar, salt, butter, egg, egg yolk and vanilla and beat the mixture till smooth. Beat in 1/2 of the flour till smooth, then add the remaining flour and knead on low speed till smooth and elastic (tip: always add the flour portion-wise). Transfer to oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for 1 hour 30 minutes.

Once the 1 hour 30 minutes have passed, punch down the dough and roll out on floured surface. Using a doughnut cutter (or a large cup as a substitute and a bottle cap for the doughnut hole), cut out the doughnuts, cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for 30-40 minutes.

Heat oil in a deep-fryer and slide doughnuts into the hot oil using a wide spatula. Fry the doughnuts on each side until golden brown. Remove from hot oil and drain on a kitchen paper towel. Allow to cool for 2 minutes then dip in glaze while warm.

For the glaze, I usually prepare three toppings: powdered sugar icing, milk chocolate and white chocolate. To prepare the powdered sugar icing, just blend any amount of granulated sugar and sift it on the doughnuts (tip: dip the doughnuts in a honey bowl before sifting the sugar for it to stick). To prepare the chocolate topping, use any brand of chocolate and melt it in the microwave (repeat heating every 15 seconds and stir until it completely melts). I like to make my doughnuts look as good as they taste so for the final touch up, I top them with sprinkles!

(I am mostly proud of my photography skills, I literally checked the photos for like 10 times already haha. They look so good!)
This recipe takes a minimum of 4 hours to finish, so I suggest you prepare your favourite playlist to listen to while baking and your favourite movie to watch during the 1 hour 30 minutes. Trust me on this, you will have a whale of time (I always do)!
