The Morning Life

Updated: Aug 30, 2019

We’re the kind of generation where the majority is more of night people than morning ones. However, I’ve grown to be a morning person; mainly because my mum didn’t allow me to stay up late as a teenager. She still doesn’t sometimes, but tonight isn’t one of these days since I’m writing this at 2:20 am. Anyway, I’ve naturally adapted to mum’s house rules by becoming a morning person. I prefer sunrises over sunsets. I prefer morning studying over night studying. I prefer early morning walks over late night road trips – or maybe I like both equally. And I definitely prefer breakfast meals over dinner meals; I haven’t even had dinner in months (probably because of my diet but still).

Being a morning person doesn’t mean that I don’t get to enjoy the night time; because I actually do from time to time. Just like right this moment. I’m in my bed with my laptop on my lap, only the laptop screen lighting up the room a little (or at least the keyboard). Everyone’s asleep so I’m enjoying my own company by doing one of my favorite things; that is writing. So I’m currently in my bubble, a dark one; me, my laptop and the sound of typing – the sound of words flowing out of me. As much as I enjoy my night bubble, I can’t pull it off past 4 am most of the days. But when I rarely do, I still always wake up around 12 pm; and that’s because I’m a morning person (who enjoys the peacefulness of night).

Whether you’re like me or you’re a night person, this label shouldn’t define how and when you enjoy a day. Surely, you enjoy one part of the day more than the other but you can still get the best out of both parts (are you following?) I mean, you should enjoy your day to the fullest every now and then. You can choose a day once every month where you can wake up early just to enjoy breakfast outdoors. You’ll get to see a life that you miss out on when you rush to work in the morning. You’ll get to enjoy the early morning life; the almost-empty streets, the fresh air, and the morning silence. Try to go out on a weekend and you’ll get to truly experience the silence that comes after a storm; it’s very calming (and sometimes freaky if you let it get to you).

This summer, I’ve enjoyed more breakfast outings than I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve enjoyed them as much as the other evening outings, sometimes even a little more. Even though I’m a morning person, I’m always annoyed to wake up early just to eat breakfast outdoors when I could easily enjoy my meal in bed. But once I reach the restaurant and have my breakfast, I completely forget how sleepy I’m and just enjoy the moment. I like to pay attention to the morning life; the sound of shops opening their doors, the sight of pedestrians having their morning coffee, the walk-ins into bakery shops, the street sweeper cleaning before the rush hours…etc. I even like to see how many of the apartments’ windows are open; how many are awake this time of a morning. I also like to notice the kind of people around me having their breakfast as well; they’re usually teenagers or old women. I especially like it when I spot a married couple having their breakfast together on a weekday; they must have called in late to work (or sick; even more romantic).

It’s very therapeutic to pay attention to the details we miss out on because of how rushed life naturally is. You become aware of the life happening around you and more appreciative of your own. You become aware of how scary fast time goes by and so more appreciative of the time you’re given. And if you’re a sucker for the little moments in life like I am, then you’ll find joy in seeing people living life as we know it while you’re pausing yours.

I think what I’m trying to say is; don’t be that person who worships the night and just the night time. Be that person who does it both; enjoy the morning as well as the night. Be that person who enjoys the calmness of the early morning as well as the peacefulness of the late night. Take yourself out to breakfast by daytime and enjoy a movie marathon by night time. Enjoy your days to the fullest!
