Every now and then, one craves a good cry. The kind of cry that washes all the sadness in you and makes you feel good and clean afterwards. I crave a good cry more often than one should, probably because it also gets me more in touch with my core self. Every time I need to watch a sad movie, I spend at least 30 minutes of serious googling till I find a good one. So I thought it would be a great idea to list some of my favorite heart-saddening movies and save you some time.
1) I Am Sam Whenever someone asks me to suggest a sad movie, I Am Sam is always the one. That is why it is number one on this list. It is about a mentally challenged man who fights for the custody of his young daughter. It also shows you how the girl fights for her mentally-ill father. This movie is, hands down, the most heart-rending movie of all time! I remember how I cried my heart out during the whole 2 hours 12 minutes movie. I sobbed and wept and sobbed and wept non-stop. By the end of the movie, I was emotionally drained. I even cried when I was telling my mum about the movie. I’ve been begging her to watch the movie for years now, but she doesn’t want to experience that level of sadness.

2) My Sister’s Keeper I remember that I kept postponing watching that movie because I couldn’t imagine Cameron Diaz in a sad movie, until I actually watched it. The movie is about a young girl who tries to earn medical emancipation from her parents who use her body to help her leukemia-stricken sister. It shows you the painful road that people go through when they decide to fight a disease. It is moving, poignant and powerful. Of course, I cried quite a few times during the movie. I even teared up a bit while watching re-watching the trailer a few minutes ago.

3) Pay It Forward It is about a young boy who tries to make the world a better place by a simple idea he came up with. Along the way, you see how this idea affects many lives including his own. It is a very inspiring movie. The ending was incredibly sad. I’ve only watched it once years ago, and I still remember the final scene. It was powerful and heartbreaking. On a side note, I want to start a side project where I actually do his idea.

4) Southpaw I thought this movie would turn out like Rocky. Southpaw is similar to it boxing-wise but the story itself is more moving and different. It is about a boxer, Billy Hope, who is trying to get his life back on track after suffering from a horrific personal tragedy. I experienced all the feels while watching this movie, including a heavy heart and a lump in my throat. Jake Gyllenhaal outdid himself! I wouldn’t mind watching this one again. I really loved it!

5) One Day Oh, the endless times I’ve watched this movie and cried near the end! The movie is a romantic drama. It is about Emma, Anne Hathaway, and Dexter, Jim Sturgess, who spend the night of their graduation together then they agree to meet on that same day every year. Sometimes they succeed in doing and sometimes they don’t, but the agreement is standing still nevertheless. It is an all time favorite to me; I like watching how their friendship evolves into something meaningful. The ending is shocking though. I was watching with a smiling heart when out of nowhere something terrible happened that I burst out crying for minutes and minutes. I’ve suggested this movie to almost everyone I know and they’ve all loved it. The only common comment I received was how annoying Anne Hathaway’s British accent was. I personally never noticed. Please watch the movie if you haven’t already.

6) Les Miserables I never heard of the famous broadway musical, Les Miserables, until this movie was released. I wouldn’t have watched it if I hadn’t found out that there are many great actors in it: Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne. The movie is about a man who is taking care of a worker’s daughter while being hunted by a heartless officer. This escalates into a chain of events that affect their lives, and others’, forever. I didn’t realize that the movie was a full musical until I was 10 minutes in (I thought they’d stop singing at one point). So if you’re not into musicals, the movie might not be a good choice for you. They literally sang the whole 2 hours and 38 minutes of the movie. Not a single word was spoken! But that didn’t matter to me because I was hooked on from the first scene. The acting was great, the live singing was shockingly captivating, the performances were, of course, incredible and the story itself was interesting. To me, Anne Hathaway’s performance blew me out of the water! Her vocal abilities mixed with her amazing acting skills made me cry my eyes out for a full 15 minutes. I still watch her part from time to time because I personally think that it was the greatest part of the whole movie. She won a freaking Oscar for a 15-MINUTE SUPPORTING ROLE! The rest of the movie was similarly depressing. I cried again a couple of times during the whole thing.

7) A Little Bit of Heaven It is a RomCom with a touch of drama kind of movie. It gives you mixed feelings all the way through. It is about a woman who finds out that she has cancer so she lives what little time she has left to the fullest and along the way she experiences all kinds of love. The movie makes you laugh and it makes you cry. I have watched it a couple of times and I still enjoy it every time.

8) P.S. I Love You This movie is my number one on my list of romantic movies. I watched this when I was 16 years old, and I got obsessed with it for quite some time then. There were times when I took my laptop to school just to watch the movie during break-time. I love the love story it narrates, even though their love story ended sadly. The movie is a mixture of romance and drama. It is about a young widow who discovers that her late husband left her messages to help ease her pain and begin a new life. It is a sad touching movie. You’ve probably all watched it already, but I just had to include it in the list.

9) Still Alice I haven’t watched this movie, yet. But I’ve watched its trailer many times that I lost count and my heart felt heavy every time. My mum watched it a couple of times and she liked it. It is about a woman who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease so she struggles to deal with her family and work. Julianne Moore won an Oscar for her role in it. I will watch it soon and update you with my review.

Although I have watched an endless number of movies, it was tough to list down my favorite sad ones. It took me quite some time to come up with this list so I hope you enjoy my picks for you. I hope you enjoy a good cry that helps you disconnect from the world for a while. Here is also a list of 10 feel-good movies if you wish to cheer up a bit afterwards.
